Sean Payton returned as the Broncos’ play-caller with a 23-17 win over the Chargers, but the offensive spark was modest and third-down conversion remained a weakness. The game highlighted Payton’s emphasis on a strong ground game, as 29 rushing attempts complemented 28 passes and allowed Denver to close out the contest with a late push. J.K. Dobbins found rhythm late, stressing the offensive line and reinforcing the plan to lean on the run to support a slumping QB. The takeaway centers on sustaining balance, unlocking underused weapons like RJ Harvey, and keeping expectations on Payton’s run-first framework as Denver nears a tougher slate. Looking ahead, health and consistency for the quarterback, plus depth at running back, could shape the season’s trajectory.
